With a size of roughly 5x6 cm, SmartPoints are battery-operated devices that look like other active RFID tags. With a robust enclosure, SmartPoints are designed to be easily mounted on different physical objects, such as pallets and roll cages. They can also easily be installed in locations such as a trailer or a freezer in a supermarket.
SmartPoints provide many capabilities that go far beyond traditional active RFID tags. In fact, SmartPoints provide physical objects with a number of capabilities that are normally associated with human intelligence. So in many ways, SmartPoints create intelligent objects :

• Objects equipped with SmartPoints monitor their environment. A temperature sensor is included in every SmartPoint, but SmartPoints can easily be extended with any additional sensors. Some examples include infrared, motion, CO2, humidity, open/close, soil moisture, shock, and weight.
• Objects equipped with SmartPoints determine their own location. Based on the wireless communication with the Ambient infrastructure, a SmartPoint can calculate its own location (in 3D) in the network. To do this, the SmartPoint is using an intelligent algorithm based on RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication). So the Ambient Product Series 3000 provides a real-time locating system without the need for a separated software application such as a Localization Engine.
• Objects equipped with SmartPoints have memory to store a history and additional information. Each SmartPoints provides 1 MByte storage, which is accessible with a file format system.

• Self-locating –SmartPoints have the capability to determine their own location within the Ambient network.
• Dynamic Event Reporting – SmartPoints have the intelligence to determine relevant business events, based on sophisticated user-defined business rules.
• SensIO – SmartPoints have an integrated temperature sensor and can easily be extended with any additional sensor.
• 1 MB storage – SmartPoint provide 1 Mb data storage that can easily be accessed using a file format system Ambient’s wireless mesh networks provide a very easy to install solution with the following benefits:
  • Very low Total Cost of Ownership - Due to very low hardware costs and the ease of installation the TCO of Ambient’s wireless networks is approximately one quarter of traditional active and RTLS solutions.
  • Self-organizing – Ambient’s wireless networks consist of a GateWay and up to 256 MicroRouters. The network setup is completely automated, as MicroRouter automatically discover and join the wireless network.
